WHAT IS THE MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAM?
The Middle Years Program (MYP) is one of three programs offered by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). It is a program that helps students participate actively and responsibly in a changing and increasingly interrelated world. Learning how to learn and how to evaluate information critically is as important as learning facts. The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (MYP) is internationally recognized and is designed for students ages 11 through 16.
Roberto Clemente Middle School is offering years 1 through 3 of the MYP.
GENERAL INFORMATION FOR THE IB MYP PROGRAM

What is an IB Education?
Broad and balanced, an IB (International Baccalaureate) education represents a balanced approach, offering students access to a broad range of content that spans academic subjects. As students develop in the MYP, they engage subject-specific knowledge and skills with increasing sophistication. In the MYP, students study a range of subjects and often bring together two or more established areas of expertise to build a new interdisciplinary understanding. MYP students study coursework in 8 subject areas: Language Arts and Literature, Mathematics, Science, Individuals and Societies, Language Acquisition, Arts (visual and performing), Physical Education, and Design (technology).
Key Findings from Research on the Impact of the IB Middle Years Programme
In a study exploring the influence of the MYP on student performance and teacher pedagogy in the United States, teachers reported that, on the whole, they believe the MYP benefitted students by encouraging higher-order thinking and educating the whole child. Teachers also suggested the MYP improved teacher pedagogy by encouraging collaboration and teaching beyond the tested material (Kobylinski-Fehrman 2013).
An externally conducted quantitative study in the United States compared the Science performance of MYP students with that of their non-IB peers. In all cases, the MYP students outperformed their non-IB peers.
Impact of previous MYP enrollment on participation and performance on AP and DP exams
Results show that students previously enrolled in the MYP were 34% more likely to take at least one AP (Advanced Placement) or DP (Diploma Program) exam in high school. Moreover, MYP enrollment significantly increased the likelihood of achieving at least one "college-ready" score on a college preparatory exam. (by 39%).
In addition to preparing students for rigorous high school, MYP prepares them for college and beyond. Independent studies comparing IB cohort students with their non-IB peers show that the college retention rates as well as the graduation rates for IB students, are higher.
What Colleges are Saying
“I have always been a supporter of the International Baccalaureate. It is a thoughtful and genuinely intellectual curriculum with an unusually high degree of integrity and connectedness. There is no other curriculum anywhere that does a superior job of both educating students and inspiring a true and broad-based love of learning.” Vanderbilt University
“The IB is well known to us for excellent preparation. Success in an IB program correlates well with success at Harvard. We are always pleased to see the credentials of the IB Diploma Program in the transcript.” Harvard University
